fun, charming, & I liked the very end! but wanted a little more out of the art and was disappointed that it seemed like this was trying to make fun of overused superhero tropes and be ~different~ but it ultimately ended up following almost all of those same tropes. it fell a little flat for me because the irony didn’t work and the story was predictable and recognizable in lots of other media. still appreciated what it was trying to do and enjoyed reading it!

Quince is a charming graphic novel about a young woman who received super powers during her quinceañera, which she gets to have for one year. The powers are exciting at first, but quickly disrupt her life in unexpected ways.

On the night of her quinceañera, Lupe is granted a set of unexpected and unexpectedly exhausting super powers: flights, super strength, and some invulnerability. Her Abuela reveals that she, too, gained powers when she turned 15 and steps up to train Lupe for a year of crime-fighting, crushes, exhilaration and all-nighters.
The characters of this comic are loveable and well-drawn, but the book as a whole suffers from some first-book awkwardness, especially in the page layouts and the pacing of the action. However, it all comes back together for a very emotional and meaningful conclusion that made my inner Buffy fan very happy at the end.

This is a super cute middle grade comic about a curvy, Latina superhero. Although this is definitely for a younger audience I really enjoyed this much needed take on the superhero genre. The story creatively tackled tough topics like fat-shaming, depression, bullying, and grief. This is exactly the type of story I hope to share with my niece when she gets older!

Best line: "Jasmine is mean to everyone. She regularly says hurtful things about my body. That doesn't mean you're allowed to murder her at prom."

This was a sweet and fun comic about a girl who receive magical superpowers the day of her quinces and her tough Abuela begins training her to be a superhero.
Throughout the comic Lupe learns that superpowers are hard and that because she was given these powers she has a responsibility to help the world with them. The whole thing is a beautiful metaphor on growing up and on how helping others doesn't have to be a huge battle of good vs. evil, but instead a constant struggle that we all have to face to do better.
Sometimes just being willing to help is the most heroic thing that we can do.
