I can’t decide if I like this. It’s well written and quite creative but Tessa is ridiculously written. The characters feel like tropes without depth. Not sure I’ll continue the series but I might.

It was a cute book. I had some trouble getting into it but found i started to enjoy it the farther along I read. I did find the MC's "maternal instinct" comments cringy, the antagonist was pretty obvious, and the love interest was forced but the dynamic between MC and our sidekick was amusing and the Chiefs hidden power was definitely a welcome surprise. I also found it strange that our novice witch and her ragtag group of 4 managed to kill 50 experienced, powerful sorcerers but whatever.

DNF. The voice of the narrator unfortunately added to me not liking the main character very much. She wanted to help her aunts but didn’t try very hard to do so unless it was being sarcastic. The descriptions of the use of magic just didn’t do it for me. And the ridiculous “we take what we want” attitude of the so called witch mercenaries called in to the town was obnoxious.
