City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards was an unexpected hit for me last year- I had been in a fantasy slump and nothing was really hitting the spot. COGAM was recommended to me by a friend and WOW. The story and characters were incredible and I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for book 2. When I found out I got an ARC from Kayla Edwards, I was so excited and as soon as it dropped on my kindle, I binged it in about 2 days. This 4.5 star book was exactly what I hoped to get but now I have to wait for book 3 now????? Worth it tbh.

City of Souls and Sinners picks up shortly after book 1 left off with Darien and Loren trying to move past the events of Kalendae and being able to be together with no one hunting Loren. Of course, nothing ever goes smoothly and when people start going missing, Darien’s surges start getting worse, and Loren is blackmailed to search for the Arcanum Well, we get the bulk of the story. My favorite part of book 1 was the build up of Darien and Loren’s relationship and their chemistry was top tier and I was happy that just because they were together now, doesn’t mean we still get that incredible chemistry and moments. The plot kept me hooked and I really can’t wait to see where Kayla takes us in book 3!

If you love Romantasy with a city like in Crescent City and an epic romance and side characters, this series is for you. I’m so happy to get to follow along with Darien and Loren’s story and can’t wait to see what they’re up against next!!

Just… no. There’s too much. I did love Darien, and I even didn’t mind Loren… it’s just everything else. For something with SO many pages of repeated plot lines and countless miscommunication tropes??? No thanks!?!

We follow Loren and Darien after they saved the city and Loren tries to get her powers back and is blackmailed into opening and finding the well in a crack in the veil by the boss guy. The start and the end were good but the rest felt like they were trying to justify the plot and explain what was going on at the end like an encyclopedia. NOT as good as the first but the romance was EATING AHDHBZ

After the third attempt at reading just the first 30% of this I’m done. I don’t honestly know if it’s writing style or the characters themselves, but I am both bored and confused. I feel like I don’t know what’s going on and I also just don’t care. Loren reads very immature and young. I don’t know why Dorian is interested in her. Fans of this series go on and on about him, but I am underwhelmed.
