I read this for a class, and honestly - I don't think I liked it very much? The characters felt very forced, and felt like they were operating in the 1980s instead of the late 90s/early 2000s. The gender politics were a little clumsy, and the romance parts felt extremely over the top/silly (and out of character). The main character felt very judgmental of the others around her, and I don't know - I just didn't get a good feel for the characters or the setting. I'd be interested in reading the next book since this is the first one. I also thought this mystery itself was a little...flat? It wrapped up kind of quickly at the end without much discussion of motivation.
