CHRISTIAN!!!!!!!!!! :DD

I will be the first to admit that I gave Unearthly 4 stars because I felt like Clara had picked the wrong guy. I honestly skipped a good chunk of the book because I didn’t want to hear about Clara and Tucker. I wanted to hear about Clara and Christian. And boy, I got what I wanted in this one. Besides the Black Wings, the relationship between these three are my main focus. It’s the best for Tucker if he just stays away from Clara. I wish I could tell him.

I liked this one much better than Unearthly, solely for the reason stated above. But there was also a lot more mystery. We find out more about what and who Clara is. I was shocked at a few things, and there’s more heartache in this one book than I’ve read in a while. I didn’t cry, but there was definitely an ache in my heart. I think if I had a better relationship with my own mother, I’d feel differently. You’ll just have to read to find out.

Entertaining enough on a rainy day. I'm glad they're not just falling into the "because it's our destiny" thing, but I'm fairly certain it's inevitable in the next book.

Def better than the first one, but the ending SUCKED!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I can't help it - this is going to be a gusher! Cynthia Hand's angel series is definitely at the top of my list of the best angel fiction around. I just can't get enough of this series. It may have something to do with Tucker, who is probably one of the most droolworthy male characters I have come across (next to Alex from Hunting Lila of course) but it is also to do with the original slant on angel fiction.

This is the second book in the series and I felt it should be retitled 'Revelations' because all the secrets come spilling out in this one. Seriously - a can of worms writhing all over the floor! All the reasons for the way Clara's mother behaves come stumbling out. I am going to be really careful here as I don't want to give away any spoilers, but if you haven't read Unearthly ( first book in the series) then you might want to stop here.

The book is quite self explanatory at the beginning, so I do feel that this book could easily be read as a standalone. The author gives us enough information to be able to slot right back into the story.

Suddenly there seems to be a love triangle going on, as Clara feels that she is meant to be with Christian. How upsetting was this! Tucker is just amazing, but appears to be a little too human for Clara and she can't stand to cause him pain. I am hoping she clears the angel dust out of her eyes soon so that she realises she might be making a mistake. The poor girl is in complete confusion over which route her love life should take. I feel I need to intrude and direct her in the right way.

The first couple of scenes mention Midas, Tucker's beloved horse, and as I drew my first tissue of the book, I knew I was in trouble. I felt like my guts were being wrenched out at the very thought of what might have happened to the horse.

The last quarter of the book had me in tears. There I was again, with my Kleenex mansize tissues, blubbering away. The story line took an unexpected direction which left me feeling really sad by the end of the book. Life is really cruel! I felt sorry for Jeffrey as revelations concerning his purpose come to light. I even felt sorry for Samjeeza, the Black Wing angel from the first book, and I can't believe I am saying that. But it was sooo sad!

This isn't a fast paced book at all, so don't expect a thrilling, intense ride. This book is slow in pace which is definitely necessary as the truth comes flowing out. The ending is poignant and yet enlightening as Clara knows so much more about herself now.

If you love angels, then this series is a must read!

Cynthia Hand follows up a terrific debut with another just as compelling novel.

It is however, very different from Unearthly - and not entirely to its advantage. The love which was so wonderful to watch grow in Unearthly is more or less falling apart in Hallowed. Clara truly does love Tucker, and wants to be with him, but she struggles with her new vision, suggesting that someone dear to her will die. The vision unnerves her and causes her to lose faith in herself, her family and in their relationship. She ponders whether it is fair to him to continue the relationship when it dawns on her that being with her might put him in danger.

The closer the vision gets to come true, the weaker Clara becomes. Everyday life becomes a struggle and weak as she is, she has a harder time avoiding being pulled into Christian. Since I love her relationship with Tucker, it became an annoyance that she had to work so much harder to keep away from Christian.

That annoyance is however made up for by far by the painful realization of what her vision stands for, when Clara finally understands. I think anyone who has experienced the knowledge that someone dear is about to pass away will understand exactly what she goes through, and that pain was so wonderfully illustrated that it puts the annoyance of her struggle to handle Christian in the shade.

Where Unearthly was a sweet romantic novel about first love and self-growth, which had me longing to be seventeen again, Hallowed is a much darker novel about the miseries and pains of life, and learning to cope with them.

As disappointed I was to find that Clara had to fight so hard to be with Tucker, I also am amazed at Cynthia Hand's ability to illustrate the doubts and contradictory feelings Clara have about everything in her life. I recognized what she went through many times, and felt for her on several occasions.

I'm happy I read it so long after it's release; the wait for the closing chapter that comes with Boundless isn't long - and I can't wait to read it.

fuck that

I won't say this book is disappointing, per se, but it's not as good as the first one. The writing is still good, but not as good. There are some interesting/clever turns of phrase, but they're not exciting enough for me to muster up comments about them and there aren't as many of them. The characters are still enjoyable, but the feeling I had about a good number of them not being very complex deepened here. The Love Triangle of Doom is...still not terrible, but while both guys are relatively likable I still don't care about Clara's feelings about them. And her feelings about them take up a LOT of space in the book. Occasionally I thought that Hand veered into the territory of having Relationship Drama/True Love take the place of actual plot. But that's partially because it feels like there is much less plot in this book, with a more anticlimactic, well, climax as well as ending. It helps that the writing and authorial voice remain good, but it's NOT a good feeling when after I finished the book I had to think about it to come up with what the actual events were in it. Far more exciting is when during my reading it feels like awesome stuff is happening even though if I were to stop and think about it technically the plot's not moving forward that quickly. A book doesn't need to move at breakneck pace if it's doing such a good job playing with/adding depth to theme and character that each minute reading feels like a minute well spent. I'll still read the next one, but hopefully the writing, characterization, and plotting live up to the first book.

Notes while reading the book:
Spoiler"But you need me too. Otherwise nothing would ever get done.” “I still hate you.”
First Rule of Angel Club
"I’ve never been one of those girls, either, who dreamed of getting married, never forced a boy to say vows with me on the playground or dressed up in bedsheets and pretended to walk down the aisle. When I was a kid I fashioned swords out of tree branches." – Wooden swords like in Eyes Open
Kay is head of a sorority house at 27? Odd dream.
Only Sam will suffer? Watchers.
"Not very women’s lib of her, I think, if she believes my entire purpose on this earth is to hook up with some guy."
“This isn’t going to become one of those creepy situations where you show up at all hours of the night to watch me sleep, is it?
Oh true love blahblah.
Ew. Ew.
Safe & sooooound.
Like the Quidditch Cup.
Ok this sounds pretty contrived and dumb right now. We’ll see where it leads.
Psychic Edward Cullen, eh?
We need the Intangere to help us, and no angel-blood who’s been taken to hell by a Black Wing has ever returned to tell us what it’s like there.”
Mountains=angelic?
9 halfbloods. Dimidius.
“It’s not stalking if you’re happy to see me?” I suggest tremulously.
120 is max age.
“My power’s unpredictable when it comes to you.” – Unpredictable is better than omgunique.
Oh, she’s experiencing Guy #2 now. How…predictable.
"Now I’m talking in clichés."
"Sheesh, Carrots, did you just say I’m your Mr. Right Now?”
I’m unclear what the plot of the book is. Not to say there isn’t one, but…
Totes.
"Even though you can’t see anything particularly special about her...William is so sensitive, he understands me, he swept me off my feet, oh misery, blubber, blubber, but how can I go on living without Rafe and his devil-may-care ways and his dark and only-a-little-abusive love?"
Climax? It’s a bit like the Twilight non-fight.
He declined to kill her.
Hallowed ground. Mrm.
Erm, wtf?
Michael. 99 when she married him. Oh, is he FULL angel? So she’s 75% angel?
"Okay, so this is the fantasy of every child of divorced parents, come true. Turns out, my parents love each other. They want to be together. My dad, all this time, wanted to be with me."
Intangere, Triplare, Dimidius, Quarterblah. Free will.
Robert Turner. Cougar. Triplare. Died.
Prince of Light…
"Playing the part of super-villain" - He's kinda more interesting than almost everyone else.
7 triplares. Oh so’s he. That’s…convenient.
We belong together? Meh.
At the end of this, I still find Christian kinda creepy and Tucker kinda idealized. I guess Christian is somewhat idealized too. Good heroine though.
Jeffrey’s missing. Really? All the angels at Stanford?

At first when I was reading it, I was kinda bored, not going to lie but then I picked it back up because I don't like not finishing a book so when I picked it back up, the story got better. lol. BUT gosh, this book was such a heart-wrenching one T_T I remember crying. lol. At first I didn't like Clara mom in the first book but I grew to like her a lot in this one. And gosh, Clara and her love for these two boys T_T To be honest, I love both boys but I love Tucker way too much for Clara. BUT Christian and her would work out so much easier but I find that Tucker and Clara can work out if it wasn't for all these obstacles T_T I have my faith in Clara and Tucker.

3.5 stars

Hallowed is just as entertaining as Unearthly, albeit with sorrows. Pretty much.

The story is centred around Clara who had to deal with her failure in fulfilling the purpose and figuring what those visions actually mean. Unfortunately, it's not getting any easier as someone she loved most will soon die and things seem to have gotten bad with her relationship with Tucker.

After failing her purpose, Clara's been having a weird vision about someone she loved most will die. And when she found out who that person is, she was pretty much devastated. She's getting stronger now and no longer the old Clara. She also discovered things about angel-bloods unknown to her, which was pretty overwhelming. Plus another jaw-dropping fact about her mysterious dad. Later, she knew that she wasn't a Quartarius after all.

Tucker was quite less, IMO. In fact this second book showed a lot of interactions between Clara and Christian. However, he was still always there when she needed him the most. Ah, and he was jealous too whenever Clara is near Christian. But to be honest, I think they should be together. I still root for Clara & Tucker though, despite everything.

Christian discovered something about him which was very shocking to me. And he seemed to keep telling Clara that they belong together, which is true. He wanted to be friends with Clara, but every time he's with her, Tucker seemed to misconstrue Christian as somebody who tries to ruin their relationship. Poor Christian.

Jeffrey's been acting all weird and it was because he has received his purpose, too! *gasp* He's not Quartarius as well. And I've been wondering, why is it only Clara who could feel Samjeeza's presence? The others must've been able to do the same, too. That confused me a lot. Angela's been having visions too.

Well-paced. Lots of exciting things happened in Book 2 And if you guys are curious, just grab the book and devour it.

Can I actually wait for Boundless? NOPE! I am going to get it next month, if possible. Hoorah!

A great second to the Unearthly series. I just couldn't put the book down when I started it. When Unearthly kept me up just wanting to know what will happen to Clara's vision, Hallowed did the same, only that a lot of revelations happened. THE FREAKING REVELATIONS!!!! I just loved them so much! There were both the high and low peaks, and a lot of heart breaker scenes.... TUCKER

*is still crying for Tucker but internally rejoicing for Christian*
