I bought the book because I really thought the concept was cool, but overall I was bored. The characters were okay and while it was at first cool to see some disney villains mentioned here and there, it got tedious to continue on with the notion that because they are villains they are going to resort to building a school to teach "evil" and that they like to eat food gone bad, etc. I enjoyed the chapters with Ben and his situations in Auradon, but I only got into this book around the last several chapters or so (when they go out to search for the Forbidden Fortress). Also I couldn't help but think that I saw several words misspelled.

Rating: 4/5

This book was so much fun to read! I loved learning everything that happened with the four characters right before the beginning of the Descendants movies.
I feel like by reading the book, I know more about the characters and I understand why some bonds are closer than others in between the VK's.
It was sad to see that they weren't always close and they would've betrayed each other at one point in order to make their parents happy with them. But I loved when they came together towards the end, especially when they realized that their families wouldn't care if they were put in danger to satisfy them, they will still be disappointed in them, and they bonded over that fact.
Everything just makes so much sense now and I can't wait to rewatch the movie before continuing on with this series.
I definitely recommend you reading this book if you love the movies or you just love Disney fairy tales.

This was an amazing read. This is the prequel to the Descendants movie that premiered in 2015. I, of course, have watched the movie before reading the book, so I thought it was interesting to see how their lives were before arriving to Auradon in the film. I thought the different POVs were great and the world building was fantastic. I thought Ben, Carlos, Evie, Jay, and Mal were amazing character. I did feel bad for them as it seems like most of their parents such as Cruella De Vil and Maleficent did not really care about their children just the things that will give them power and make them rulers. I can't wait to read the second book, Return to the Isle of the Lost to see what happens next. Also, I cannot wait to see what Descendants 2 movie has in store. I am a fan of musicals, so I will definitely enjoy that movie. Overall, a fantastic read.

What I liked: It was jocular with a twist on most classic Disney movies.
What I didn't like: it felt like a published Disney fanfiction.

After I finished the book, I found out that is a prequel to a Disney channel movie.

3.5 stars? Maybe? Undecided.

Eleanor loves these movies and I have to say that I enjoy them myself as well. I love the stories and seeing how the new generation of villains are growing and changing.

3.5/5. Felt a little young, but certainly fits the idea of the TV movie.

ETA: I didn't realize this was a middle grade novel, but that makes so much sense!
