I enjoyed this one, not as much as The Martian, but it’s still a fun read. I agree with the general sentiments from other readers that there’s something “off” about the character of Jazz. I think it’s possibly just Weir’s writing style, his voice is quite unique and I think it overshadows the voice of the character he is trying to develop to a certain extent. It doesn’t matter how many times you tell me who this character is if you don’t show me the evidence to make me really believe it. To me, Jazz was the same guy stuck on Mars. I really liked that guy, but it was strange trying to reconcile that voice coming from someone who was supposed to be a Saudi woman who grew up on the moon. I would love to see a visual re-interpretation of this story in film or tv though, there’s some really great roles for a very diverse and interesting cast that could be a lot of fun.
Overall, this was still a great read, lots of science, political and criminal intrigue and a really well constructed fantasy world that felt very believable.

A simple heist goes berserk and becomes a tense race to sway the rule of the only city in the moon. Weir can definitely do science and logic his way through science fiction, and even if my eyes glazed over on some of the explanations, he knows what he's talking about. Major points off for there being a regular stream of irrelevant lines that reminded me that this main character is in fact a women written by a man. Not to mention the statement that basically said incest is fine on the moon??

Not the best of books. The main problem was the main character, Jazz. I really don’t like her, and we’re living this story though her eyes, so there’s a lot of Jazz.

I hated the cliche writing, the book is full of it. “In this bar you could get anything you wanted to drink as long as it was beer”. And the whole “best” narrative though the book was a pain, “my dad was the best welder on the moon”, “my friend was the best EV pilot on the moon”, “this is the best parking job I’ve seen”, “my friend had the best…” whatever. I wish this was the best book ever too Andy.

Artemis by Andy Weir is a scifi novel about a city on the moon called Artemis. We follow Jazz Bashara, an Arabic woman who calls the city home, works as a porter, and her side hustle is smuggling. Jazz is is brilliant and seemingly underachieving while hoping to be rich enough someday to afford more than the coffin she calls a bunk. Jazz is a smartass, so my kinda girl.

"He's right, Dad. I'm an asshole. But Artemis needs an asshole right now and I got drafted." 😂

Jazz ends up in the middle of a conspiracy to control the silicon industry on Artemis by Brazilian mobsters. She, and a motley crew prepare for a heist to sabotage this in order to keep the city from being controlled by the mobsters, and it goes wrong. Cue panic.

This story kept me on my toes and I enjoyed the science-y bits. My favorite. Of course, was the pedantic Star Trek reference at the beginning of the book 🖖🏾. I also really enjoyed Svoboda's character, but I wish we had gotten to know him a bit better. We really didn't get too much from the side characters. There was decent representation with a gay Jewish guy, Muslims, disability rep.

This was a decent read, but I'm not sure if I'll seek out more novels by this author. I'm always up for recs though!
