A fan of Resnick, as I am, I only just got around to reading this, the defining story of his "Man" future history. A series of short stories describing human progress, from Earth to rulers of the Galaxy, the fall, and a final extinction. A rather grim view of humanity, but perhaps not untrue. As with Resnick, it is not the tech, rockets and rayguns, but no fundamental progress—no immortality, no AI computers, etc.
