I’m really loving this series. Quaint, innocent, funny.

This is just the sort of book an insomniac like me needs to read before bed. Herriot's England is definitely the one everyone romanticised, and I wonder if it ever existed. I suppose it did, for a brief period of time and for a small number of people. Herriot is a great writer, flowing between poignant and funny, while all the while informing you of practices that kept the countryside running before the Second World War. Even at the time he was writing this, much of it was a distant memory, so surely there are some rose-coloured glasses there, but he certainly doesn't sugar coat the difficult aspects of life as a country vet. Having a hand up a cow and getting kicked by an ungulate seems to be a daily occurrence. I found it particularly interesting to read about the old "cures" that didn't really work and the old men who believed in diseases that never existed like "stagnation of the lungs". Funnily enough, I know that homeopathy is still kicking around in the veterinary world, but I think that few who had lived through James Herriot's time and saw revolutionary medical advances would be quite so keen to take modern medicine for granted.

This book is a pleasure to read, and the perfect book before bed in the dark days of winter.

All Things Bright and Beautiful // by James Herriot // narrated by Nicholas Ralph

I'm honestly not sure there is much to say here. I absolutely adore Nicholas Ralph as the narrator and am so sad to have finished this second audiobook already. He has made this experience so absolutely charming and I couldn't imagine a better narrator for these books. I laughed out loud so many times and he helped me remember why I had wanted to be a veterinarian for so long. The emotions he put into this story... I don't even know how to describe it. I loved using these audiobooks as palette cleansers in between other audiobooks. They are just so easy to pick up and put back down as there are many small stories put together to give us a glimpse into the life of James Herriot, country veterinarian.

I previously recommended these audiobooks for families but I now have to put a disclaimer on that: there is a lot of talk about drinking alcohol as well as drinking and driving in these books. Please remember that these stories happened a long time ago when that was not yet illegal. I myself was raised in Germany so this wasn't an issue for me as alcohol isn't a taboo topic there like it often feels here around children. I still think these books can be a fun experience together if you are prepared to explain those scenes if needed.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
