This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I love Slavic folklore and this book was chock full of it. I really enjoyed the discussions of spirits and their place in the world, as well as Kazik’s development on this issue as it relates to his own belief system. 

The queerness represented was really lovely, especially for a historical setting- it felt almost (but not quite) queernormative with the way the characters felt about their own sexualities and genders. The exploration of polyamory was great and felt very real for a triad of this age. I was pleasantly surprised by Gisela’s genderqueerness which I did not know about going in! 

There were times the plot seemed to just plod along, but it really picked up at about 50% and I found it hard to put down. 

I think my biggest complaint was that it really didn’t feel finished, and that a very central conflict wasn’t resolved. Surely the author is setting up for a sequel, but it still felt a little too close to a cliffhanger for me. 

Overall this was totally worth reading and I am looking forward to the sequel, but it did have its flaws.
