Set in not quite our Earth and not ever specified time. They have radios, lipstick, blush but no cars or phones. Very much 'I would like these 3 characters to be together, so I'm going to make that happen."

really interesting premise! i’ve really been rocking with polish folklore related stories lately so this was a fun pickup. and the cover art, my GOD. fantastic hardcover/jacket.
i’m honestly a little torn on how i feel. the bathhouses, the spirits, the folklore, the mystery - all so cool! however, i have some gripes.
1. the formation of the throuple. i enjoyed seeing kazik and gisela grow closer, but aleksey felt like an outlier a lot of the time. he’s just so incredibly sus (for good reason), but the fantasy of it all saved it. a sidenote, but i wonder why YA authors insist on writing heavy romance plots with 16-17 year-olds? this definitely would’ve thrived as a YA novel with 19-22 year-olds imo.
2. the ending felt incredibly rushed. for a 400+ page book, you should probably save more than the last 3 chapters for your ending to round out. it just fell a little dead to me.
3. i expected the kiss to be… more? or even a couple moments of “did it work or is she dead?!”nah, she’s chill, all is well after a 3-day rest. this is the main plotline of the whole book, where is the drama! i want a giddy rush when reading romance and that just never came to be. even her temporary ghostliness felt unsatisfying because she put that curse on herself for no good reason!
4. i understand the ending was likely setting up for a sequel, but not even touching onan aleksey confrontation pissed me off. what do you mean one of the biggest plot-points in this book doesn’t even get it’s completion?!
despite my grievances with some of the plot/romance, i really did have a good time. the banter was fun, the mystery was intriguing, and the “will they/won’t they” kept me hooked. i’d recommend if you want to enjoy a fresh-feeling world with a split between compelling narratives of the spirit and mortal worlds (and a little mystery).
