"Wild thing...you make my heart sing." Sammy is rubbing off on me. She's a tough little kid -- has had to be, with a mother who periodically abandons her to pursue her Hollywood career. Really? Grow up, woman!! You have an amazing daughter and you're missing out.
Sammy collects enemies and allies. She can create a family out of the kids at school, the kids on the camping trip to see the condors...ugly birds she's horrified at...
But one bird is shot, and its mother is missing. Everything changes, and Sammy goes into crime-solver mode. She must name the birds before she can connect to them. so Marvin and his mother become the focus of her investigating.
She enlists her buddies...and a maybe new boyfriend, and off the go, to save the condors.
LOVED the last scene. Made me wish I could see these ugly birds in person.

I listened to this while waiting for other audiobooks to become available. I enjoy that Sammy grows up a bit in each of her adventures. I also enjoy that Van Draanen embeds social issues into each of these novels. In this one, we are introduced to new characters and learn about the efforts to save the condor from extinction.
You know how TV shows have those weird episodes every once in a while where all the main characters either barely make an appearance or make no appearance at all? That's what this Sammy Keyes book felt like. Definitely my least favorite of the series so far, but it's still a good book, and I know there are only good things ahead.
