It is a very short story (probably the shortest one I have read so far) about a painter called Niggle. This story was meant to be a story with a moral of some sort I guess. After reading few reviews, I realized Tolkien was probably talking about death in this story. But I did not enjoy reading it much. I am starting to think that his short stories are not good enough for me. Maybe I had way too many expectations going into them considering how amazing his other books are.

This is hands down my favorite bedtime story of all time. It inspires children with wonder and it makes adults cry. I can think of nothing else more perfect.

It's also one of those books like [b:The Man in the High Castle|216363|The Man in the High Castle|Philip K. Dick|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1448756803l/216363._SY75_.jpg|2398287] or [b:Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art|136814|Walking on Water Reflections on Faith and Art|Madeleine L'Engle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320404692l/136814._SX50_.jpg|1136355] that basically sums up my life's work.

A quick lighthearted story that reads a bit autobiographically of Tolkien trying to write the Lord of the Rings (or his fiction generally). It's a fable, so the characters are rather generally drawn but it has a beautiful message.

This was a Christmas gift that sat on my shelf until I picked it up to read it today. It was a short read—maybe 29 minutes—but a deep one, and now I feel like I need to go back and steep in it a bit. It’s a lovely allegory with lots to reflect on, and I look forward to thinking about it more in the days to come. It is also one that is could easily see moving to a five star with more time and consideration.

It may actually be the best thing he's ever written.
