It was longer than I thought it would be, and still a rather typical mystery. But since it was more a short/novella, it was a lot more enjoyable than a full length novel because it cut out most of the things that full-length mystery novels seem to think are pertinent to their stories, namely sex with no purpose and drawn out fight scenes for the sake of action.

Sloppy editing and a plot that was far too straight forward left me more than dissatisfied with this novel. I enjoy the Nikki Heat novels which are just a bit of fun, but this wasn't even that.

I liked this. It was fast moving and had a twist that I was thinking might happen but wasn't sure. Nick Storm is called out of retirement/death to handle a kidnapping case.

What is it about?

This is a collection of 3 short stories featuring Derrick Storm. The Storm novels are Richard Castles’ claim to fame in the TV show Castle.

In the first of these stories, Storm is called upon to help figure out who kidnapped a powerful senator’s son. The next two stories follow directly from the first story which quickly develops international tension.

Was it good?

I have read most of the Nikki Heat novels by Richard Castle, which are also mentioned in the show, and I watched the show to completion. (I apparently have failed to write any reviews for the books but I would describe them as “entertaining”.)

While I enjoyed the Nikki Heat books because I was familiar with the character from watching the show, I felt nothing for Storm and felt that all the characters were flat and unrealistic. Storm acted like an ass the whole time, and I don’t understand why he’s so special. I’m not one to notice a lack of character development, but in these stories it was painfully obvious: there was no background, no middle, and no future.

The story was predictable and contained all of the usual spy novel gimmicks.

These are short stories. If they had been full blown books I would have been more likely to DNF the books, but I powered through it. Honestly, I’m not sure that this “Richard Castle” is the same “Richard Castle” from the Nikki Heat books.

I actually really enjoyed this. It was much better written than the Nikki Heat books. This is the first in a Derrick Storm trilogy, and I was impressed with the way they wrapped up some elements of the story while dangling enough mystery to make we want to read book 2. Well done.

I love the Nikki Heat series so when I saw that there were short "stories" being done on Derrek Storm I knew I had to read them! This did not disappoint - cant wait for the next one to come out!

How do you review a fiction novel, for a fictional character with a series of fictional titles written by a fictional television character in a fictional television show and remember what part is fiction and what part is reality?
This is another tie in to the Castle television series and sees the character Derrick Storm resurrected from death to commence a new series of stories. What we have is a very short introduction story to Derrick Storm, who we discover did not die but has been hiding in the mountains and has been pulled into a comeback against his will.
I am not sure about the character of Derrick Storm, he is portrayed like an American James Bond but with out the charm or sophistication. The story is razor sharp in delivery and sets you up for a series of novels that must be in the pipeline.
Will I read anymore after this brief introduction, I am not sure? I just did not gel with the character at all as the macho stereotype was a bit grating. Storm seems to have three thought patterns through out the story being solve the mystery, where is my next drink and where is my next sexual encounter. I just found the character needed more development and far more baggage.
Anyway it will be interesting to see if Storm’s return will make a make a mention in the Castle television series as to why this has happened.
