I've been looking for a good 'Highlander' romance, and this one did the trick! A stuffy Englishman is in Scotland for property reasons (I haven't read any of the other books, and it doesn't really matter why, just that he's there) and gradually falls in love with Mad Annie, who's sassy and somewhat feral.
There's a supernatural element that's really nicely done and only a little cheesy (I happened to listen to this in October, which was perfect), and while Annie could be a caricature of a sassy Scottish wench, she's very fun and I was absolutely rooting for her. It helps that she's absolutely sincere about her beliefs, and John is a nice logical foil without being a jerk about it. They're true partners by the end, and it's nice to get to see them in that state.
The side characters were generally great, like the families and the villagers and even Finley; the side plot was okay, but there were some one dimensional villains and everything was escalated and resolved super quickly at the end, which is pretty typical. It didn't matter to much because it wasn't the true focus of the book.
I haven't been this emotionally invested in an audiobook romance in awhile! A little but of slow burn, a little bit of angst, a lot of humor, strong emotions between the characters, and the steamy scenes all worked really well together. The narration was also great and absolutely helped set the scene; I'm glad I picked this one up as an audiobook! I'll definitely be reading more.

I think I have found a new historical romance author? This had its unrefined moments and the last 25% did introduce some rather unnecessary and, in my opinion, fanciful plot points. Given the book was 407 pages, it could stand to have lost the last 60+ pages.
This is best read with the Outlander playlist in the background. Would recommend that vibe.
I found the pace slower than expected and it brought some lulls which were not always required, but I was impressed with the quality of this considering it is indie published *and* historical. It brought an (arguably) authentic aesthetic which, though I cannot speak to, was an enjoyable reading experience.
