I didn’t enjoy it that much but it’s an objectively impressive book considering when it was written and just the sheer number of fish this guy knew.
Had promise, and I can imagine of the time it was amazing. But it was pretty mind numbingly slow in places, plus the racist/colonial language used is not ok, and I just wanted more from the story. Meh.
I listened to this title via Audible.
I think audible are amazing with their original productions - the sound quality, the voice actors, and the sense of immersion is incredible.
Everything of Jules Verne that I have read has been great so far, and I think part of that is due to the audible original production (as I have yet to read a paper version of Verne's work!)
This was a captivating tale. Nemo in particular is an enigma and I quite enjoyed the dynamics of the ship. I also admire the description of a submarine which had not yet been invented! Verne's imagination is extraordinary.
I would be interested to read the paper version. I have heard that it's more technical and more boring. However, this edition was a fun and engaging listen.

This is a 3.5 for me. 4 for what it was. 3 for what it is.
Long and tedious. I expect that in the early twentieth century it would be compelling in its novelties and descriptions of aquatic natural history. But now, not so much.
Nemo’s hecatomb was repugnant, and reminiscent of more recent examples.
Why is every uneducated laborer inherently less than the professor and Captain Nemo?

Feels unfair to rate this book. I’m sure at the time it was interesting for folks to read about the ocean and a submarine felt futuristic. For a 2025 reader, this was a slog to get through. Not for me.

Maybe classics aren't for me.
But in all seriousness, there was a lot of this book that I appreciate. And a lot I don't. But what I don't can easily be skipped over while reading. Re: passages upon passages of meticulous descriptions of submarine flora.
