Frankie Corzo can do no wrong. I love her narration and her voice is so perfect and exceptionally sexy in this book.

I really enjoyed listening to this story, as the premise and the early intrigue were really fun. I appreciated Corrie’s struggle to be taken seriously and her taking charge of her sexuality and bodily autonomy, especially as a Latina woman. There definitely need to be more romance book about archeologists, and you better believe I’m a sucker for “there’s only one tent” every single time!!!

Unfortunately the ending of the book fell flat for me due to some funky pacing, and I didn’t find the resolution between our leads particularly believable. I wish the thievery plot had unspooled with a bit more suspense, and with a bit more of a denouement from our climactic ending scene before the epilogue.

For all of Corrie’s desire to prove herself and be more than a sexual object, I didn’t feel a ton of connection with our leads beyond sexual chemistry. A lot of the time it really seemed like Ford was just like every other guy that objectified her and used his privilege to gain a leg up on her professionally. I liked them together because I’m a sucker for a good academic rivals trope and some fun banter, but I didn’t find them super compelling. Maybe I needed more yearning???

All in all, a fun quick read if you’re looking for an adventurous and very horny romance!

I would've opted to mark this book as DNF had it not been this month's pick for book club. I doubt I'd pick this book on my own, so maybe I am not the intended audience, however to put it nicely, I was grateful to put this book down and I would not recommend it.

Being a massive Indiana Jones fan, I was all too hopeful that this book would scratch my itch for archaeological adventure while also presenting as a fun romcom. I admit that I saw the title and was immediately taken.

However… it was a bust. It had some fun adventure elements and the plot of looking for the final resting place of a fictional Mexican warrior was really promising. I enjoyed some of the parts where the characters actually found the Aztec ruins/remains. But then it just kinda went overboard with stereotype—ridiculous high stakes, multiple potential villains, cliche romance.

Yeah. The romance. It was pretty cringe. And unfortunately, the FMC reads like she was written by a man, the way she is described and even the way she talks sometimes. The MMC’s POV chapters definitely didn’t help when referring to her body and skills etc. The sex scenes seemed way too heavy on the physicality and reputation of the FMC than on the actual passion and relationship between the two. Idk, everything the FMC did seemed over-sexualized, especially considering a major part of her character was trying to escape those stereotypes. It just seemed like the author fed too much into it that it sort-of had the opposite effect that she was going for. Maybe I just found the writing too cheesy and awkward. And the fact that the MMC was THIRTY-EIGHT-YEARS-OLD and acted the way he did and said the things he did really gave me the ick.

It was a quick read overall and I never wanted to DNF it, I just was disappointed with it.
