Peter Diamond doesn't believe in those new-fangled computers and forensic evidence; he thinks it detracts from real detective work. The body in the lake is unclothed and has no identifying marks, and Diamond is not amused by the number of people who identify it as a missing (from the BBC) soap opera star.
This story has a lot of interesting characters and twists and turns. I guessed the solution fairly early on, but it still kept my attention.

I really disliked the main character, Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond, and I don't intend to read any further books in the series because of that. (There are plenty of mystery series out there that don't make me want to bash the sleuth over the head!)
Aside from Diamond, the other characters were interesting and the mystery was reasonably intriguing. The book was definitely helped by the fact that two major sections were told from POVs other than Diamond's - those sections were much easier and more pleasant to read.
Overall, the book was solid, apart from the unappealing MC.

Some parts I really like, other parts seemed to drag. First of a series, I doubt I'll read anymore. If you like Bath, England, though, you may enjoy it.

More like a 3.5, fairly good mystery but there were a few shortcomings I felt.
ACAB Detective, irritating and nasty to the public and his dept. Yes, probably the suspect you break rules about very likely would be the culprit, but the cost was losing this reader-listener.
