This book was fine, the mystery itself was well enough done that I didn't DNF it based on my annoyance with the main detective. I won't continue with this series. The detective is an abusive ass, and this reads as really dated because of that. It's supposed to play into the valued masculine stereotype of the time, but reads really poorly now and there's plenty of other series I'd rather spend time on, detectives I'd much rather spend time with.
This novel is marred by two long sections narrated by different suspects, which purport to be their statements. They read much more like sections from Victorian mysteries. I found them to be completely unlikely.

Meh, I might continue with the series
Written in the early 90's, this books introduces the reader to Peter Diamond, one of the last detectives who relies on old-fashioned detective work and is highly suspicious of all the new technology that is starting to be used. The book is told from four different perspectives which really helped give the whole story a well-rounded feel as you could see the same event from different sets of eyes.
2.5 stars. It's an okay procedural mystery, but the author never manages to breathe life into his characters.
Very clever but reads like a first book in a series. I liked it well enough to continue with the series.
