This story packed a punch. Second books in a series can tend to be filler books, but I did not feel that way with this book at all, because SO MUCH HAPPENED. This was not just a book to fill time in between the events of the first book and the conclusion of the series. There were plot twists and scary moments and gentle moments and beautiful, beautiful friendship and love, all occurring in the midst of terrifying and traumatizing events and basically running for their lives. Just as action-packed as the first book!
Bree was able to learn so much more about herself and her power, both her inheritance from Arthur and her own rootcraft inheritance from Vera's line, in anticipation of a HUGE confrontation in the third book I can only imagine is coming. She was able to come into her own a bit more, grappling with learning more about her ancestral lines and coming to terms with who people want her to be versus who she really is and then deciding who she wants to be all on her own.
We meet so many new characters in this book but also get so much growth and development from the characters we already know and love.
There were so many BRELWYN moments, and I am DYING for more...
The writing in this book made me FEEL THINGS, let me tell you. The writing is masterful and lyrical and evokes so many emotions. I literally cannot wait for the next book.

I love the whole world Deonn has built here; filled with legend and magic but grounded in real issues and as diverse as they come, it's an absolute joy to get lost in Bree's story. To the extent that I eked out the end for days because I didn't want it to end. This is a series that's ripe for reading over and over and over.
Oh, and lots more Selwyn please, thank you.

rape is a part of the plot and is brought up multiple times but is never described or shown. large parts of the plot involve slavery but i don't think they go into detail about what happened then, just implied. others are racist towards the characters multiple timesimmovabletype's review against another edition

Note: How this book is classified as medium paced is beyond me. It is the definition of fast paced if I've ever seen one. These poor kids barely get to rest.
