Sorry, I cannot form words right now...let alone a whole review. I'll write one soon. Right now I just want to curl up with the book in my chest and never let it go.

Bree really went into this book still dealing with grief in so many different forms. It was refreshing to see book two not disregard that and in fact build on that and the struggle of ancestral trauma and becoming her own character and not what other people expect or want from her. Yes there is a subplot of romance but this story isn’t about the love triangle between white boys, it’s about Bree. Forever team Bree and here for whatever she decides to do in book 3.

WHEWWWWWW this book goes so fucking hard. it’s just! REMARKABLE work deonn does here, that it can be this fun bonkers magical YA Chosen One fantasy and also so grounded in such thorny complex themes. it’s about consent & reparations & remembering history & healing from trauma, and above all it’s about creating a better world: carving a space for yourself even when you’re afraid you don’t belong, even when you’re told you’re not enough. it’s about getting right up to the precipice of what’s Okay and teetering over the edge for months and finally blowing past it because that’s what you have to do to protect yourself, to protect the ones you love.

and OF COURSE like all modern arthuriana it’s about the concept of Fate and what we do with it; where we go next, when told who we must be. “no longer the pain-welded blade. no longer a blade at all. no one’s weapon but my own.” UGHHHH it’s about CHOICE! makes me wanna rewatch she-ra and buffy and even fucking supernatural.

it’s all of that, and it’s also about being the sexiest motherfucker in the world. five fucking stars, thank you tracy deonn!!!!!
