What can I say about this series that hasn't already been said?

What I loved:
  • the complexity of the relationships between Bree, Sel, and Nick that are continually developed in this second book
  • Alice is the most epic best friend ever
  • a challenging conversation about politics, power, racism, & what it's actually like to try to break down barriers
  • an identity crisis that isn't so much a crisis as it is an exploration
  • have I mentioned that Sel is my entire heart?

Literally the only complaint I have is that I have no idea when I will get another installment in this series, and I didn't want it to end.

Going into the second book of this series when I so loved the first, I was really worried that I too overhyped to just enjoy it! Happy to say that although I didn't devour Bloodmarked as quickly as Legendborn, I found the expansion of the Legendborn Cycle universe intriguing and by the end of the second book I was keen for the third.  This series is also getting me to come around on love-triangles, noting
I would still be delighted if Bree ended up with neither boy

AHHHHHHHHH HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT FOR BOOK THREE?!?!?!?! 😭😭😭 Such a great examination of grief. Deonn clearly understands how it feels to grieve, and it was such a gift to be able to read this in the thick of my own.

Enjoyed while reading, but afterwards the issues stuck with me. The plot is trying to do too many things at once and feels convoluted. A large theme has to do with mesmer and torture, gaslighting, and Bree not being able to trust herself. This was difficult for me to read. Many areas had Bree making choices that made no sense, and while the characters are lovable, they can also be insufferable and wind up in entirely avoidable situations. That said, it was still a fun read that I flew through and I'm hoping all the loose ends get tied together in the 3rd installment.

Bree really went into this book still dealing with grief in so many different forms. It was refreshing to see book two not disregard that and in fact build on that and the struggle of ancestral trauma and becoming her own character and not what other people expect or want from her. Yes there is a subplot of romance but this story isn’t about the love triangle between white boys, it’s about Bree. Forever team Bree and here for whatever she decides to do in book 3.

 - BLOODMARKED picks up right where LEGENDBORN left off, and we're right back in the thick of it with Bree and the crew as the situation rapidly deteriorates.
- This book not only expands the world of the first book, but also digs deeper into the effects of generational trauma while exploring possible ways to reclaim what was taken.
- There is also a major focus on consent in this book, in multiple forms, and what it means for different people at different levels of power to assert control.
- Amid grappling with these difficult topics and ideas, Deonn also delivers an absolute page turner with this book. I'm already counting down to book three!
