Re-reading the James Bond novels in order was meant to be a nostalgic lark, and they start off well enough in this creaky but effective romp, in which we are introduced to Fleming's original vision for Bond as the unfortunately necessary blunt instrument of the British state, a hard, calculating, misogynist killer with a cool flare for the dramatic and a funk that appears to drive women mad with desire.
As a kid I gobbled up these paperbacks as simultaneously I ran to the local movie house for each new installment of the Broccoli-led franchise featuring Sean Connery as the One True Bond James Bond. For a WASP kid of the 150s-60s the movies were catnip, the books single-sitting reads that made one feel just a little grown up.
Score so far: not so bad.
