I loved this book! It was a cute, lighthearted romance and I loved the characters and relationships. The concept that opposites do, in fact, attract was fun and added a nice touch to the story!

If you are in the mood for romance books (this rarely happens to me), this is a good one that blends some nice relationship building with cultural elements, while also being rather cute and without spicy content.

😍 The good:
The discussions about traditions related to life, love and death, as well as some of the heavier topics and quotes were a great addition. The character development was interesting to follow and somewhat wholesome, while the story had some plot twists that made me want to read more.

😅 The not-so-good:
The romance side was obviously rather predictable and overly cheesy, though this is a characteristic of the genre. The female main character didn't have the best personality out there though, being overly paranoid and competitive, judging her love interest quite a lot. The book also dragged at times, as the middle part was not that interesting and many things were crammed in the end, but my interest was already lower until I got to that point. The narrator was not the best out there either.

I loved this book!! The characters were fun, the banter was great, and I loved learning more about the Chinese Zodiac. The relationship between Olivia and her Pó Po was so sweet, as was Pó Po’s tie in with Bennett. I also very much enjoyed the narrator - she did a great job!

There things I loved about the story and there were things that I didn’t. The plot focused too much about the zodiac meanings that it took away from the love story. Lunar Love is cringy, cute, and rom-com-like.

Having read most of this book from the comfort of a lounge chair, I can confidently say Lunar Love is an excellent beach read. I flew through it and now have a soft spot in my heart for Liv, Bennett, and their friends and families. A few things I enjoyed:
  • Thoughtful biracial representation (both leads are Chinese and white)
  • So much information about the lunar horoscope
  • Minimal steam kept the focus on the leads' emotional connection
  • Delicious descriptions of food and baking
  • The sweetest grandmother/granddaughter relationship between Liv and her Pó Po
  • Nuanced discussion on sticking with traditions versus reinventing them to keep them alive

It was definitely repetitive at times and I think the reasoning for the leads not getting together was drawn out for too long. Fortunately, the aforementioned strengths made up for this, and I ended up filled with warm fuzzies at the end of the story. I look forward to reading Kung Jessen's second book when it comes out next year!
