“For me, you were the biggest miracle of all, Mom.”

Gwendy is in her mid-60s and suffering from early on-set Alzheimer’s when Richard Ferris returns to her with the button box, and one last task. The ultimate task that will rid the world of the button box once and for all. Final Task takes us back to Castle Rock, to Derry and gives shout-outs to the Dark Tower series.

When I started this, I was going to say that this was my least favorite of the three books. I was going to say that because I don’t like space novels nor do I particularly care for science fiction. But this wasn’t either of those. This was a Gwendy novel and I cried at the end.

Awesome  book the end the series. Very entertaining. One issue I had with was King taking a story and putting his hatred of Trump for all to see. Enough King give it up. You must really be mad right now with what is going on. Anyway time to stop reading King. I know it won't hurt you but you ruined Holly and now you have ruined the end of Gwendy. Thanks you idiot no more new books from you for me.

Meh. It was ok. Taken individually or as a three-volume narrative, Gwendy's story was... fine.

I love how King interconnects his works, but here it was very hit and miss. And I didn't dig the space setting of this particularly installment at all.

They can't all be home runs.

Great end to series

Oh Stephen King, this one is not good…

Just a few notes:

Lots of reviewers are butt hurt about the political tones in this book. Not me! Only in a progressive world could the Tet Corp succeed as it has in this novel.

While I can’t say I loved everything about this book (young Gwendy and Gwendy in her 60s seem very disconnected), I still enjoyed this foray into space. What’s not to like about a space mystery? It’s the final frontier, right? I have some gaps in my Stephen King readership, but I don’t think he’s written a novel set in space before, so good on him for braving a new setting.

What is the deal with what appear to be fondly remembered shopping trips popping up in this novel and in Billy Summers??

The scene I enjoyed the most (despite thinkingit was a bit over the top) was Gareth’s death. As soon as we were introduced to the scorpion, I knew it was Checkov’s scorpion. Is it just me, or did anyone else think that Gwendy siccing Boris the Scorpion on Gareth was similar to Roland using David the hawk to best Cort?

Am I crazy, or did Richard Farris switch teams? It’s been a while since I read the first Gwendy book, but Richard seemed like a bad guy in that novel, whereas here Gwendy thought of RF as a friend… and usually guys with RF initials are BAD GUYS in Stephen King’s novels.

There were at least two instances of code numbers adding up to 19 in the book. Why do you like 19 so much, Stephen King?

Overall, a fun experience!
