Very reflective, and a gorgeous writing style. I tend to struggle with essay collections, but soared through this one. I love the variety of topics, all covered with consideration and honesty. It does definitely feel like a bit of a time capsule (despite being published this decade), reading it in the second Trump administration, but still a very worthy read.

Would have been more relevant it I read it closer to 2020. I also prefer her natural science writing and that wasn't the focus of this collection.

Since I spent a quarter of a century living in the Southern US, I think the author accurately describes the culture and region in this collection of essays, especially when she writes that it has always been "so bound up in both beauty and suffering that it isn't possible to untangle one from the other."

I couldn't love Margaret Renkl's writing more than I do. Her observations are keen and wise and so human.
