I first became acquainted with Margaret Renkl when I attended the Southern Festival of Books. I attended a session where she was in conversation with Ann Patchett. At the time, she was the editor of Chapter 16, the phenomenal literary magazine published by Humanities Tennessee. I was thrilled to attend another Southern Festival of Books to hear Margaret discussing her first book [b:Late Migrations: A Natural History of Love and Loss|42372550|Late Migrations A Natural History of Love and Loss|Margaret Renkl|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1558972731l/42372550._SY75_.jpg|66029332]. I loved that book, and gave it to several friends as gifts. When I saw that she had written another book, I had to read it. It did not disappoint. In fact, I now have several other books that are on my TBR thanks to this book of essays. They are, in no particular order: [b:Air Castle of the South: WSM and the Making of Music City|1190470|Air Castle of the South WSM and the Making of Music City|Craig Havighurst|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328830877l/1190470._SY75_.jpg|1178498], [b:Lucy Negro, Redux|25602253|Lucy Negro, Redux|Caroline Randall Williams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1432611493l/25602253._SY75_.jpg|45410796], [b:This Is Happiness|42972008|This Is Happiness|Niall Williams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1557412358l/42972008._SY75_.jpg|66799824], [b:How to Tame a Fox (and Build a Dog): Visionary Scientists and a Siberian Tale of Jump-Started Evolution|31374512|How to Tame a Fox (and Build a Dog) Visionary Scientists and a Siberian Tale of Jump-Started Evolution|Lee Alan Dugatkin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1475990246l/31374512._SY75_.jpg|52063785], [b:We Shall Overcome: Press Photographs of Nashville During the Civil Rights Era|39651098|We Shall Overcome Press Photographs of Nashville During the Civil Rights Era|Kathryn E. I also found myself looking up and then following on social media several organizations as diverse as Southerly, The Bitter Southerner, Southern Foodways Alliance, MLK50, and the Equal Justice Initiative. I highly recommend this essay collection--and now I may have to go read it again.

this was so beautiful, honestly. i’m not from the south so much of this was unfamiliar to me but this made me feel hopeful about the world in a way that i haven’t in a long time. renkl is a really talented essayist
I will forever be a fan of Margaret Renkl. She is a fabulous writer. My fav essays: An American Tragedy, The Passion of Southern Christians, Christians Need a New Right-to-Life Movement, An Open Letter to White Christians, and America’s Killer Lawns.
I enjoyed reading well written articles about the south and the issues we face here but this was a lot to take in at once. I think they'd be better absorbed as originally published as columns.
