In the 1920s, the lecture series appears to have been the equivalent of today's serial podcast, or at least that's how this collection reads to me. Forster is casual but erudite, and through his thorough and sometimes humorous analysis, he conveys his deep understanding of and love for the novel as a literary form. There was much more to this book than I expected, and I very much enjoyed it.

One of the best books I've read about writing novels. A truly inspirational guide to a complex and daunting effort. It is scary enough to make the decision to write a novel. To face the prospect without a reliable guide? UNTHINKABLE!!

One of the best books on literature and writing that I've ever read. I loved this.
Interesting book, can be very difficult to read and focus at times. I had to read it for class or I would have never made it past the introduction.
This would be getting a higher rating if I'd read - or even heard of - most of the books listed. I might check out some of the titles and see if Forster was correct to choose them to demonstrate his theories, but while his observations are sound I'm not sure if his examples have stood the test of time.
Very interesting read for anyone who cares about how novels work, but quite a heavy and convoluted text despite its short length.

a concise and clever meditation on the titular 'aspects' - i found forster's description of plot to be moving - "the final sense (if the plot has been a fine one) will not be of clues or of chains, but of something aesthetically compact, something which might have been shown by the novelist straight away, only if he had shown it straight away it would never have become beautiful."
This is an amazing book for everyone who wants to pursue any career related to literature and analysing it. It was a great ground work for my lit class later this year. I loved that every proposed criterion was accompanied with examples from novels.
