A true western masterpiece. Love, loss, friendship, and coming of age wrapped up in a grand adventure. While the pace was slow, the characters were so beautifully developed and the plot fell together so perfectly that 850 pages felt like 300.

I truly took to heart, the quote about reading only one western, and how it should be Lonesome Dove. Truly a classic and a pinnacle read of character work and description. You feel yourself grow with the characters and enjoy their presence among the pages.

I look forward to following the other novels of the series and more of McMurtry's work

Wasn’t sure going into this one. I’ve never read a western before. I do think this could’ve been shorter and the abrupt ending was a bit disappointing for me. But I did find the book engaging and I was moved to tears twice. I did like the switches in POV throughout and found that it kept the story interesting.

McMurtry has a wonderful ability to conjure interesting characters with a name and a short anecdote. You find yourself caring deeply about them all, entering each chapter unsure if they will be met with joy or hardship. Incredible things happen, but the novel retains a feeling of realism and plausibility, never breaking your immersion. It is an epic adventure and a rich story. I felt that unique sadness that many readers will recognise from finishing a special book.

Augustus McCrae has got to be one of my all-time favorite characters.
Everyone in this books feels real, their words and actions feel believable to their characters. You definitely grow attached.
