Wowowowowowow. What a book. Couldn’t put it down and when I was almost finished I actually slowed down so I could savor it. Such rich characters, and great narration.
What a badass name for an antagonist: blue duck.
Gus is the man, and I probably cried just as much as July and newt did on their journeys.
Taking a star off for all the Custer glazing, and I felt like some character arcs were quickly wrapped up but maybe that was the point of the harsh realities of the Wild West.
I will be recommending this book until the day I die, I wish I could wipe my memory of it to read it again for the first time.

ORIGINAL THOUGHTS: I love the characters in this book. They are some of the best Western characters ever and I loved the time I spent with them. The only problems I have are the length and Blue Duck's lack of motivation. I understand the thematic reasoning behind the Native Americans in this book, but I wish we had a bit more of an understanding at the very end. Overall, I'm glad I read it and recommend it to Western fans.
After a few months removed from this book I can say without a doubt that McMurtry crafted a masterpiece. The characters and set pieces have stuck with me like nothing else. It’s not just a good western. It’s a great piece of literature and one of the best stories ever told. Highly recommend to everyone who likes their soul torn out and spit on.
