Trifft die richtige Stimmung, Charaktere größer als Dostojewski. Angenehm tragisch und abgekapselt. Wenig Orte, wenig Akteur*innen. Beruhigend abgeschlossen. Liebe, Tod, Aussichtslosigkeit, Hoffnung, Schmerz.

I understand why we read this book. I guess. It's a good framework to build off of. Sure. But GODDAMN is it boring! Mind numbingly, stomachache inducingly, tear invokingly boring. Most people seem to not like this book because the main characters suck so much but I LOVE an evil main character. Someone who just truly is the worst. But Catherine is annoying (and boring) and Heathcliff isn't evil in a fascinating way, he's evil in a what the fuck kind of way. Also, he's boring. The good parts of this book were the parts where Heathcliff monologues about his devotion to Catherine. If the book was *actually* full of angst and stolen glances and torrid love affairs and professions of love, I think I would have liked it. But instead, it was about uhhh nothing? If this book had been maybe 7 pages I might have liked it but who knows.

This book was a good read because I like how it was built on Mrs. Dean story all along which made me want to read to rest to find out more what happened to the Earnshaw children and their descendants. That being said its contents are quite dark, it's hard to empathize with the characters, many of them have very violent behavior and honestly I don't think it's my type of book, I enjoy better light hearted material. The ending did give things somewhat of a better turn (hence the +.5 to the final rating). Happy to have read what this literary classic is about but will not re read.
