Thoughts:
Having watched the film and then read the book, it was weird to see the few changes that were made. Regardless, I still enjoyed this story, and found it very character and emotional driven.
Louis, after becoming a vampire, continues to hold onto his humanity. He struggles with what he has to do every night to survive, and how he feels very deeply about everything.
His maker, Lestat de Lioncourt, is actually my favourite character in the book.
Lestat is kind of chaotic and wants Louis to stay with him, and provide him with riches. But then, after a hunger driven Louis bites into a young girl, Claudia, the duo becomes a trio. And more chaos happens.
Claudia is also a great character in my opinion. She has the fierceness of Lestat and doesn't let her size hold her back. She ages mentally but can't age physically, trapping an older mind in a young body. However, the story progresses and the concept of love is discussed in various ways.
I did find Louis to be a drag at some points. But I liked the relationship he formed with people.
I do have the next book so I will be starting that.

Louis is not as interesting a character as he makes himself out to be.
Deals with the unreliability of memory, catholic guilt and morals.
He is constantly struggling with his vampiric nature and his need to drink blood and bring death vs. his own moral superiority and general aloofness.
Because the world is being told through Louis and he isn't as interested in the history of vampires and his own struggle with existence it is at times hard to symphatize with him as a character.
His inner thoughts about Claudia become very uncomfortable, especially when you keep in mind that she is physically 5.

The way Anne Rice has such a command of her prose is truly awe inspiring and the level at which relationships and the drama therein is what drives the plot is absolutely what I desire to do with my writing and I now see it can be done successfully for this style of story.
