Seems there are complaints with this book having to do with tech issues and different other implausibilities. In my book - get over it. Interesting characters, fascinating story line and quite simply FUN science fiction. Good book and a solid 4 stars!!

One of the most intense books I've ever read, told between flashbacks and present-day recollections, of a priest and his closest friends who journey to a sentient planet and face the tragic extremes of existence.

The hardest part of reading this books was knowing early on that the entire crew, who the reader comes to love as his/her own, does not survive. I couldn't put it down, though.

Not sure how to rate this. It's more like 3.5. It had many fascinating parts but was also somewhat frustrating, and very long.

This is a book I probably would never have picked up if it weren't for a strong recommendation. That said, I think I'd give it 4.5 stars.

The idea of a group of Jesuits making contact with the first sentient alien beings isn't really consistent with the type of books I normally read, but The Sparrow is about so much more. Fascinating characters, beautiful writing, and the universal search for meaning in life, as well as exploring a new world makes this a book that is hard to put down. The author's training in anthropology really informs this work in wonderful ways.

Warning: there is some hard to read material, particularly at the end, but the overall feeling is one of redemption.

This was an interesting book, I loved how the story was interwoven with theology in a way that makes you look at it differently. But apart from that how the author held the suspense to the end was good.
