Not just a sci-fi book about space travel - this book is more about life, love, relationships with people and God. A fascinating and thought provoking read.

I just read this book for a second time and found it even more enjoyable. The characters are a delight and the tragedy causes me to ask tough questions about life and God.

Expertly told with an emotional gut-punch of an ending. I was surprised by how attached I got to the characters. Highly recommended for anyone who likes character-driven first contact stories.

I don't have the words to describe this book.

I'll have to sit with it for a while.

Loved it! Everything a great story should be: full of deep characterization, adventure, peril, love, cultural relativity tested to its limits, and empathy stretched as far as it can go.

Definitely blows the lid off of my non-existent sci-fi background...and I've already started on the sequel.

The best book I’ve read in awhile. I was racing through it and at the same time never wanted it to end. A fresh and invigorating take on science fiction I love every word.

I was excited about this book’s premise. But the book itself was so disappointing. The characters were shallow and one-sided, and I felt like I was expected to bring belief in the existence of a master plan to the book before even starting to read it. I felt like the author simply took for granted that her readers would share a certain theistic perspective (which I do not share). This assumption made me feel coerced.

The experience of reading this was similar to an experience I’ve had throughout my life with proselytizing family members: an experience of finding myself on the receiving end of a one-sided conversation in which the person doing the talking chooses to take the other’s silence as tacit assent. The strategy is manipulative.

Not for me

Though the idea of alien worlds is interesting to me,and the writing was good, the religious aspects felt offensive to me as a believer. I won't read more in this series.
