I have whiplash trying to keep up with who the enemy is, and I’m not sure I’m really buying it. Daji is suddenly thinking with the Empire’s best interest in mind? But didn’t she start the war? Invited the Federation in? Now suddenly, no the Hesparians convinced the Federation that they could win a war against Nikara. I don’t think I follow this change of heart. If Daji felt so concerned, why did she mock Rin at the beginning? I couldn’t put it down though. The strategy debates and implementation were so interesting, like is it gonna end up working? It never slowed down. Truly though, so much whiplash cause the Ketreyids came out of no where? They only appear to get rid of the Seal that conveniently kept Rin from using her fire for so much of the book? And they were a really convenient way to get rid of the twins and make a martyr of Augus. It makes me wonder how the relationships will change between everyone who is left alive. idk it feels like a bunch of clever ideas about a war fought with gods were thrown at a wall and Kuang just wanted a way to string them all together in one book. Oh what about this?? What about that?? Yes, and keep whoever we need alive for the next battle idea. It was all so engaging though. So maybe it worked? The twists feel less like clever twists and more like Kuang changed her mind about how things are going to go / whether this book finished the story. Obviously I’m reading the next one though

Good GOD. What a read. Everything is bigger in this sequel. Bigger rage, bigger angst, bigger stakes, bigger betrayals. I would start reading and then never want to stop. Onto the next book!

Seems like Kuang really grew into her own here in comparison with the Poppy War. While obviously still heavily inspired by historical events, this reads like a true fantasy novel that does not shy away from the unsavory aspects of its topic. The climax and denouement of this book really set it apart from the Poppy War for me, bringing about a series of betrayals and hidden motivations that make this book so devourable. I'm excited to finish the trilogy with The Burning God.
