The magic and the adventurous bits carry the book despite a habit the characters have of standing around talking about their emotions that tumbles into schlock on occasion and a bit of a whiff with the main romance. There are dragons and monsters and petty gods and assassins (terrible assassins, but so are most fictional assassins) and various mysteries, some of which even retroactively make sense of what feel like weak spots for most of the book (like why do none of these immortal gods have any idea what happened a few decades ago). Mina as a lead is solid, if a little bit standard spunky YA heroine, and while you think her love of stories and myths is there so she can move easily through the spirit world, it's more of a Scheherazade thing, and she gets long bouts of exposition every time she meets a new spirit or monster. Shin is the reason the book doesn't rate higher, an absolute void of personality, and the romance stuff rests entirely on proximity. They don't do anything but be mildly decent to each other for a bit and then become in love. The comedy relief duo secondary characters have, frankly, a much more interesting dynamic, and I would enjoy reading their romance much more. This does take a bit from the themes of love and self-determination versus duty, since you can't imagine what Mina's getting so worked up about, but then she fights a giant sea snake with a team of mysterious ghosts in a city full of flying whales and it's ok again. Just don't think too hard about the massive offscreen body count.

“Nothing extraordinary is ever done out of reason or logic, but because it’s the only way for your soul to breathe”.

I didn’t intend to read this all in one sitting, but it’s 4am now and future me will have to deal with it.

I’ve come to the conclusion that all my favourite books feel like fairytales and this book just confirms it!

Axie Oh’s writing is beautiful, accessible and full of heart that captures you from the first few chapters and won’t let go.

The romance was swoony- soul mates, reluctant allies to lovers, fake marriages, hello?!- and the rich fantasy world was perfect. This got me out of a reading slump, THANK YOU!

Although I guessed the plot twist, I didn’t mind because the characters were so soulful and human (yes, even the sea gods, spirits and dragons too). I loved the strength of Mina throughout the book too. This truly felt like a love letter to one’s family, healing and culture.

Go read this book!
