I've gotta be honest... I wasn't a huge fan of this comic. Admittedly, this was my first foray into Black Canary, so I didn't have much background going into it. As a character, DD just fell super flat for me, and the story was all over the place. I was more intrigued by Maeve's backstory. I really liked her as an antihero and wanted to know more about her. Stylistically, the art is super kinetic, and a bit like controlled chaos. A few times it was hard to get a read on exactly what happened in the scene, but overall I did enjoy the unique style. I wish that had been the case story-wise, as well.

*shakes hand back and forth*

This volume had a lot of promise and, while they did literally mash two different characters together (Dinah Lance and Dinah Drake), it was still a decent characterization for Dinah Lance. The issue lies in the fact that, while there's not much to complain about, there isn't much to praise either. At the very least, it definitely didn't push the characters of color to the backseat like Burnside (and Dinah isn't the ooc coined Mega Bitchâ„¢ she was in Burnside), but I feel like we never actually got any emotional investment in any character. The most detailed backstory goes to Maeve, who we spend hating for almost the entire volume because she's a Really Ambiguous Villain (I mean, c'mon guys, she did
Spoilerliterally kidnap a child
).

The ending was really, really rushed, too, and I don't know if it was smart to go the 'alien invasion' route (not a spoiler- established in 1st/2nd issue) for the beginning of this title. And, a lot of the times, it didn't make a lot of sense- like Ditto
Spoilerdisappearing with Kurt for decades and bringing him through the 'sound' or whatever
. Confusing.

But the art was nice and the writing wasn't too bad, so I give it a 3/5 stars.

The art style was creative but not my style. The story was kind of pointless, and the background characters hardly get any developement. Meh. Meh. Meh.

For a story that centered its plot around its characters, I wish the character development was shelled out more.

D.D. as a band member has her conflicts with the other two in her band as well as Maeve and Kurt occasionally. Originally, each of these characters finds a reason to be wary or dislike Dinah, however throughout the plot they suddenly are all closer to her than they were before despite no actual bonding between them and the fact Dinah makes no effort to work on those conflicts- she does not feel like a likable character to me for how she treats the other characters around her. I find characters like Kurt and Ditto to be used as plot devices during the entire novel and don't have anything to truly make their characters likable. I wish this story explored the conflicts and dynamics of each person in the band rather than writing off any fleshing out their backstories and character arcs needed.
I think Maeve was the only character I truly enjoyed reading about as you see multiple sides through her backstory and personality. Other than this, the art looks fun and dynamic and it was definitely something I enjoyed.
The plot itself also feels a bit random for me and I wish there was more to it then the main characters being tracked down by "Kurt's people" and things like that because these characters have 'special abilities' without explaining any actual motivations or nuance in these people. I would say the same for the cheap out Ditto is just reborn and the explanation of Ditto being some alien and the fact she lacks a personality in general.

It's not a series I would continue, but if you are more focused on just a typical superhero action and are willing to compromise emotional nuances and character building, maybe you would be interested. If that's the case- I don't see anything wrong with finding it enjoyable.

Lovely art and a total nothingburger of a story. A Dinah who is simultaneously adult enough to have been married and young enough to be contemporaries with Heathcliff, who is like 18. Which I guess is normal for comics.

Gets a 4 for the art, which was super cool/unusual/inventive. The story was more like a 2.5.
