Much like the The Children of Hurin, I could not get into this book.
I'm just looking for the magic of lord of the rings, or the Hobbit, and I know that's not fair. but I can't help it.

I can't resist Tolkien, and Beren and Luthien always made me swoon in other works. It was nice to do a deep dive into the evolution of their story.
Never thought I'd see a giant cat as a central antagonist in a Tolkien story but here we are

A masterpiece. I can't even complain that Tolkien died never having produced a finished version of the tale, because the story is so well crafted, the verse so lush, that all one needs is one's imagination to complete the missing pieces.
Christopher Tolkien did an amazing job putting this book together.

UGH the story of Beren and Lùthien was my favorite part of the Silmarillion, and reading it three more times and seeing it evolve with Tolkien's writing style was SO FUN!!! Seriously, this tale is so wacky and feels so different from anything else in the works of Middle Earth you can't help but love it.
The only downside is there's no good way to summarize this story without sounding insane or leaving out all the best details!! It's either "oh this is the story of the first elven woman falling in love with a human man!" Or "yeah so there's this lady and she wants to marry her stalker but her dad sends him on a suicide mission to do so but then her beau gets captured by Sauron but he's not Sauron yet he's actually the Lord of Werewolves if you can believe it, anyways there's also this cool dog who can TALK and HE said-"
See what I mean? Anyways, it's a great story. Highly reccomend

The story itself was all well and good (Rapunzel-esque), but I didn't enjoy the format. I get what Christopher Tolkien was trying to do, and I appreciate his efforts. It just wasn't for me.

After reading The Children or Húrin, I wasn’t expecting Beren and Lúthien to be structured the way it is. But it’s a fascinating dive into how Christopher Tolkien compiled his father’s work to bring many versions of the tale to life. I found the extended poems very beautiful—listening to them by audiobook is a special treat. Truly one of the great tales.
