Haunting Adeline (in my opinion) felt bland it was the same as Satan’s Affair (in my opinion) as it focused on the sex more than the connection between Zade wanting Adeline to cal in love with him and don’t get me started on Gigi’s murder which was shocking when it turns out that Nana and Serena (Adeline’s mother) knew who did it. But in Haunting it felt lacking. Plot wise. I would’ve enjoyed it if the author focused on the plot more than getting her characters to be in the same room together and potentially fuck.

HOWEVER—

Hunting Adeline was a MAJOR improvement in that. Now that Adeline wasn’t near Zade it focused on her story trying to escape and survive throughout her kidnapping, the Culling, the rapes, and even the murders she had to do during her captivity. And Zade (still being obsessed with Adeline) had a new side to him that made me have a soft spot for him. The once #Zadehater had now turned to a lover for him seeing how hurt he was to have failed to protect Adeline. There were some cringey moments like when he carried a whole hospital mattress on his back or him saying stuff like “I’m the darkness” but I’ll forgive him for that. I loved seeing Adeline grow a back bone and not like in Haunting where she did things without thinking I mean the Adeline Reilly who killed Sydney just so she had the chance to escape. The Adeline Reilly who killed her mother and father’s captors. The Adeline Reilly who killed her own captors and recreating the Culling to scare shit out of them. And Zade throwing Caroline into the fire. BEAUTIFUL. That’s the Adeline I like not the “I’ll do it despite me knowing it’s a bad idea” I was cheering and screaming for Adeline which I never thought I would do. I loved this book and now I love the series. I especially loved seeing Zade proposing to Addie with no diamonds it was sweet.

The spice was different. I didn’t expect to get embarrassed at the idea of blood play. Usually when you hear that you think “Who would like that? That’s so weird.” That’s until you read it and see how Zade uses the blood to comfort Addie after Xavier cut her up while he raped her. So it was shocking (not in a bad way). Also the scene where Zade pleases Adeline in front of Xavier during the Culling making Xavier all mad because Adeline never moaned his name was PHENOMENAL. I didn’t like when Zade said he took Adeline’s IUD only for him to her that he never did it just ruined the whole scene for me. The Epilogue chapter however tops everything for me especially after Zade proposes to Addie.

This book is frustrating because it's entertaining... But also really screwed up. Like... Really screwed up. I don't recommend it.

this is literally just a triggering compilation of trauma and even those without a history of sexual abuse will find this beyond disturbing and a far stretch of what a dark romance is

Had me in the first half ngl

After the 60% mark it just gets unhinged, story stops existing and it’s just pure sex - which is fine, but bro I was enjoying the story so much

Spice is spicier than a ghost chilli, story was great until it wasn’t, pretty decent easy to binge book

“Our mouths are touching the same spot,” she says shakily. “Does that count as kissing?”

“You tell me, little mouse. When I make you cry out for God, does that count as praying?”

The sequel blows my mind.
How was this so FUCKING good.
I thought the first one gave me so much adrenaline, but this one gave me an explosion.
I speed-read this in two days; that's how invested I was in wanting to know what's next, what's happening and how it will end.

Trigger warning, if you read the first book, you know how dark this book can get.
However, in this one, the first half of the book centres around sexual assault, abuse, rape, violence, injury, blood, death, killing and more.
While the second half deals with PTSD, trauma, disease, more violence and sex content of the course.
So, be warned.

While the first half of the book was heartbreaking to read.
It was important for Adeline's character growth and discovery in the second half.
She is by herself getting kidnapped, trapped in the house with these men and being done so much disgusting shit to her; she herself is in survival mode and how it keeps her sane and changes her later on.
Hence, why the first half was kind of a slow burn, as I feel like it was built up to the second half.

I love the different and new personality we get in understanding Zade.
How his mind works, we see his emotions more and understand how he loves Adeline in his dark ways. It was also a character growth for him.

In the second half, we learn and see the changes in Adeline, how her trauma has changed her and how in her way, she is healing together with the people around her, especially her relationship with Zade. It was raw, honest, and dark but such an important topic to talk about, and I feel like H.D Carlton did a good job writing it while intertwining it with the dark plotline, making it naturally addictive.

I love that while in such dark times, we still get the cat and mouse plotline concept.
It brings me such adrenaline, and the newer grown version of the character gave me a new outlook on their relationship and how they have to relearn to love the new version of themselves with each other.

By the end of it, I JUST NEED MORE.
There were so many romance quotes by both of them I DIED.

“Zade may be Hades, but the dark God has never been known to bow for anyone but his woman.”
