I thought I had things all figured out, but nope! Guess what? Sogn is going to take those expectations and break them into a million pieces off the coast of Washington State.

Delia is a wonderfully built character who knows loss, family, and what she thinks is love, until it's all dashed by the loss of one of her best friends in the nearby lake. Years pass before she discovers the shocking truth to the disappearance. For a debut novel, Sogn writes extremely well, and I'm going to be honest, I can't wait to read another book by this author! Keep it up!

Stretched believability

The depiction of how people are seduced by cults is compelling and believable. Very well written. The ending included a twist which was unbelievable. I think the book could have ended 40 pages earlier and would have been better.

Intriguing premise, but so much repetition-- and a wholly ridiculous conclusion. It felt like the story got to a certain point and the author had no idea where to go next, so she just kept spinning her wheels. This one could easily be 1/3 shorter without losing a thing.

I listed this as a 3⭐️ but I’m really leaning towards a high 2⭐️ like 2.75.
Where to begin. This post won’t contain any spoilers. I’ll start with the things I liked about the book. I really liked the story. I think it’s great. I like it because it’s something that could potentially happen to young women. I also really like the main character Delia. I’m not the type of person to really try and guess what the plot twist is but I think if you dig deep enough while reading it’s kind of obvious but not really. I thought the timeline moved at a good pace. For the things I didn’t like was the writing style. It used high school essay grammar. Can’t say I’m thrilled about that. The other thing is that there is a lot of characters to keep track of. Near the middle of the book I wished that had a piece of paper with the character Information because I could keep up with all of them.

For a debut it’s really good. I think the story itself is very rounded and not a terrible read.

This book felt like a bit of a rollercoaster read-it had the highs, the lows, the twists and turns...a little bit of everything. The cult stuff was a bit much for me, but I imagine many will dive into that angle. Solid ending on this one though, which made it all worth it. 3.5 stars.
