G Is for Gumshoe

I'm proceeding along my target of reading these at a rate of about 4 per year. I'm getting a good dose of Kinsey Milhone without burning out on them.

I think many readers who have never tried this series may think they are sort of a Jessica Fletcher/Murder She Wrote series, simply because the lead character is female as is the author. But not so. Kinsey is not a "busy-body" who stumbles across murders in her home town every week and solves them; rather she is an ex-cop and now an experienced private investigator. She also happens to be a pretty tough lady, knows how to use a gun, as well as her wits and has a delightfully snarky attitude from time to time. She needs all of her skills in this particular novel because, in addition to the missing persons case she's been hired to work, she is also notified that a contract has been put on her life by a previous, now jailed convict.

Ms. Grafton does her usual superb job of providing color and detail to the fictional California town of Santa Teresa. She keeps the pages turning with good pacing, interweaving action sequences with colorful characters and poignant moments. The reader must go with the flow as these novels progress, however, and suspend belief to some extent. If one were to catalogue all of her injuries, wounds, etc. over the course of the series, she would be one a giant walking scab at this point...and I'm only up to the 7th book so far. Having said that though, these novels continue to grow on me and I have no reason to think that I won't be pursuing them all the way to the end of the alphabet. If my timing is right, the "Z" edition should be available just about when I'm ready to read it.

Short and to the point! Lots of tension, a bit of romance and some pretty colorful characters.

Interesting. This book has kind of a crazy, whirlwind feel, but I liked it. Nice resolution for the two plotlines.

G is the best Millhone tale so far. The re-reads of these is so thoroughly enjoyable.

Kinsey solves a decades old mystery when all she was hired to do was find a missing old lady. My favorite place I have never visited in the united sates was mentioned, The Salton Sea, I got to learn about a new never heard of place in the US I am dying to now see in "The Slabs," and Kinsey gets a little "bow-chicka-wow-wow" with yet another emotionally unavailable man. Altogether, another satisfying installment in a mystery series I am enjoying more as it goes along.

Kinsey Millhone really knows how to celebrate a birthday ... she moves into her brand new apartment, finds out that a hit man has been hired to kill her (she's actually a bit offended that the price on her head is only $1500!) and has a new case that should be nice and easy to solve. Because of the hit man, she gets a fellow PI, Dietz, to guard her - and he takes this seriously - which is nice for Kinsey to have a bit of action in the bedroom. The case - to find a missing woman - should be easy but turns out to be much more complicated than it should be. Kinsey and Dietz are drawn into a 40 year old mystery, all the while trying to get away from the hit man who seems to be travelling with a young boy. A fun read.
