I'm taken aback by how well I am adjusting to classic science fiction writing from the 1950s and before, seeing as I have a high disinterest in most other writing during this same time. But same as I cannot tolerate any horror besides sci fi horror, I guess the "cool" factor of sci fi means I can tolerate the prose and writing styles of the 19th and 20th century.

I've learned about the slight panic of the War of the Worlds radio play and I've seen the War of the Worlds movie starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning (Amazon has apparently made a brand new War of the Worlds film that barely qualifies as a film and is one of the worst things to come out of a film production studio in the modern era, which is hilarious). I am familiar with the general story beats but I didn't necessarily know what to expect when reading the actual original document by H.G. Wells.

What I got was a genuinely interesting and at times horrifying alien invasion story with the added novelty of being a person that is living rather far into the future from the original publication date of 1898 with all the technological innovation that has come with the passage of time. The actual story is rudimentary for us today, but the feeling that this story holds, of horror, of unimaginable forces destroying everything you've known and loved... THAT has remained ever present in science fiction horror ever since this very book! And it's really cool to experience this piece of sci fi horror, now, in the year of our lord 2025.

Machinations that were barely conceivable to H.G. Wells at the time (a flying contraption for example), would become invaluable tools of warfare a mere decade and a half later in WW1. The concept of space aliens not only existing but visiting us with deadly intent was probably a fairly novel idea at the time. And it is rather remarkable that the modern day iterations I've seen or heard of this story basically pale in comparison to the effectiveness of feeling that Wells puts into this book. Absolutely the book is better than the movie (now movies). I could barely put it down!

A absolute recommend for me to any sci fi fans, sci fi horror fans, or classic literature fans. This is a really cool trip through time to the turn of the last century!
