I was listening to the audiobook and completely missed the part on how the martians were losing and then looked it up and was very underwhelmed.

Yeah...

I can't blame this book too much because it was written in the 1890s and pretty much pioneers the science fiction genre but goodness me this was quite dry! In stories like these I really do prefer character and plot working in tandem, rather than one over another. We follow an unnamed narrator, and there's pretty much no reason to care about him other than to admire his plight in this ensuing battle? He loves his wife and he's got friends around the area, that's about it.

This book almost works when it leans into the ridiculousness of character actions when placed in danger. The first 50 odd pages of this novel are easily the best, they set up a great atmosphere and vivid images, and they're pretty amusing too. You really feel the small community the lead character has in Woking, but around the time the main character starts wandering about, the book begins to crumble. There's obligatory and tedious area namedrops throughout London that detract from the experience, there are long sequences of dry, sand-like expository dialogue, and the general dialogue between other characters just feels so stiff and awkward. Without stable characters you learn and get to know, I really didn't find myself caring for the narrator's journey!

It also doesn't help that most of the images this book spawns are pretty much unintelligible save for people who are aware of these landmarks. Some of the alien design and imagery can be striking and exciting, but some of it can also be too ponderous and undiscernible. I particularly enjoyed the sequences in which the narrator embodies the emptiness of London, but god...

I'm glad to say that I read this, and I rather like H.G Wells, but honestly, just read 'The Time Machine' which is much more concise and entertaining.
