“CAESAR: It seems to me most strange that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come.” —2.2.37-39

i haven’t read this play since sophomore year of high school, and i’ve forgotten most of what happens besides the basics (caesar dying amongst close friends, and the speeches—god, the speeches). as an adult . . . guys, this is upsettingly good. like i know it’s shakespeare, but this is insane. i watched the 2017 rsc production the day before committing to read this play, and i was riveted. the balance scale on which brutus and marc antony stand see-saw with each minute of mulling over their motives, their characters. ugh. [throttles everyone] when the classics hit, they hit!

It is objectively a good play. Im just not big on the subject matter and find the political intrigue aspects a bit dull

ET TU BRUTÉ??????????

First Shakespeare read. Man, Sir William portrayed in his master writing that when a man becomes eloquent of his envy and articulate of his self-shortcomings, he is an obvious danger. More so, a man who masters words can transform or torment anyone, anything.

A well-familiarized English lit classic, the reading experience was difficult especially the style, but it also communicated the readers the urgency of leadership--its risks of adornment to conspiracy.

A 3-star read!

surprisingly light read; this time, i was shocked to learn that brutus was a stoic, cassius an epicurean, and antony an asiatic

definitely a bunch of clever dudes clever-ing around; noticed this time how much caesar was putting on airs

the footnotes in this version were informative and helpful, but not as helpful for understanding roman political thought as i had been led to believe
