I’m tired of reading books where the all powerful female character looses her powers. I actually thought this was the best book in the series and I was hooked. Until the end. I can’t bring myself to finish the series to even see if she gets her powers back. It’s lazy and unoriginal writing when an author does that to her FMC.

I enjoyed the story, however plot wise I wasn't really surprised by much even though our main character and primary narrator was. As a positive spin on that, it means the story progressed logically. The one surprise I did find was how the power was used at the end but I did anticipate it's use. Still a very enjoyable story.

I did find Auren to be frustrating. I think I have a bit the whole series but especially here. She just doesn't seem to think things all the way through. For example when you sneak out of your rooms you need to sneak back in rather than walking past guards in front of your door..... To be charitable this is the first time she's thinking for herself but it was still frustrating that she kept making these types of mistakes.

Love Auren and Rip and loved to see her seizing her independence and strength. It felt a little convoluted at times and while I get the point of the Barden East plot point, I didn’t think it was necessary. While I’m sure Queen Malia will be back, I think she was made to be almost too evil? Maybe because we didn’t see her much in other books and this seemed like such a stark difference from how she was portrayed before? Overall, loved the character development and relationships and I’ll keep reading the rest of the series
