Learned lots. I hope I remember it. Don't be surprised if this is all I talk about at pride next year.

History of a riot that was a major turning point in LGBT politics. The riot at the stonewall inn at the end of the sixties sprung from a growing gay culture in NYC with thriving counterparts on the West Coast. The history covers precursors like the Mattachine Society in the 1950s and 1960s and the Gay Liberation Front which arose in the aftermath of Stonewall which was huge salvos in Gay rights in the coming decade of the 1970s before the necessity of groups like Act up in the 1980s in the wake of Aids. The seeds for all later activism unfolded at stonewall. Important to know where all this stuff comes from.

update 10/20/2022 detailed description of the stonewall riots and protests. What is interesting in the account is the most physical courage was often shown by the most feminized street drag queens and trans women. Poor trans women with nothing to lose are a force of nature when riled up. Don't cross a trans woman for sure.

Update 3/13/2023 Stonewall was a very big milestone in the gay rights movement. the postwar decades seem prosperous and happy but for an LGBT person, they were incredibly oppressive. With Antisodomy laws, dress code laws against trans people made us illegal in public and in private. This is what the people on the right want if not complete eradication and genocide (See Matt Walsh et al.) Stonewall was the making of the modern gay movement there was a before but we are the inheritors of the after in other words modern gay culture and we wouldn't be here without this riot. If you are LGBT you need to know our history and this book is a good start.

Extremely well written. Less droning lecture and more a spirited storytelling adventure. While reading, I felt like I was really there, in Greenwich Village, witnessing history as it happened. Consider me delightfully enlightened.
