It took me ages to read this book and I do not know why. I enjoyed it and the story is exciting and interesting if a tiny bit derivative. I really like the characters and I look forward to reading more in this series. However, I am going to take a little break before I read the next one.

The story was compelling but the writing was so silly. Cringeworthy at times. I think I would have loved this book years ago - but as another reviewer said, "I'm a different reader now."

Overall, this was a really good book. I think some of the torture scenes were a bit unnecessary, although I can see how they contributed. I recommend this book to anyone that loves fantasy, although think judgment should be used for those that aren't teenagers yet.

Entertaining enough.

The sheer amount of sexual violence is beyond disturbing. After the second book I wasn't able to continue.

Boring. Incredibly predictable. Kept waiting for it to get better, but it didn't. I won't be reading the rest of the series.

I love this world. I think of I had read the book before seeing the TV show as a kid. I would like the book better but since I was OBSESSED with the show. I still like the show better. My favorite thing about this story both in book form and the tv show is the world and magic. I find Confessors and Mord-Sith's very interesting and I love learning about them.

(2006 me read it and thought the magic system was decent and it worked as a stand-alone, but the sequels were unappealing; modern me, far more aware of gender politics, would no doubt hate it but has no desire to reread.)
