I kept having this experience where I was reading and then I would zone out, and then I would realize that McLuhan had said something which was very true, and then I would have to go back and re-read that part before going back to reading and zoning out. It felt worth it for those moments of surprise, but I wasn't sure what I was reading a lot of the time.

If you've ever heard the catchphrase "the medium is the message", this is the book that introduced it. It introduces the idea of media as extensions of our senses; we can resist and debate the content, but the effects of being able to consume it are automatic, and impose their own modes of thought. As new media is invented, we consciously focus on (and may resist) the content, but society unconsciously adapts to the new way of perceiving the world.
It's a difficult read (and dated - written in the 60s), but so totally worth it. It's an interesting exercise to draw your own parallels to the modern day.

Обычно эксперты в понимании медиа не идут дальше понимания фразы "medium is the message", понимание которой, на самом деле, для расширенной экспертизы, не требуется. Достаточно сплошь и рядом произносить эту фразу с крайне умным видом. И кивать понимающе. Ещё можно говорить "глобальная деревня". И ещё можно восторгаться предсказанием появления интернета. Но вот убейте, не поверю, что в 1964-м году человек, занимающийся теорией коммуникации и исследованием _медиа_, был не знаком, скажем, с вышедшей за два года до того классической работой Бэрана.
Однако культурологическое значение этого текста преуменьшать нельзя, хотя сейчас его читать можно, разве что, как образец исторического наследия, хоть и "нового на 75 %" для своего времени, как писал один из тогдашних рецензентов.
Да, ещё нужно не забывать, что написал эту книгу человек с опухолью в мозгу с кулак величиной, который после её удаления забыл всё, что он прочитал для того, чтобы всё это написать.
Может, оно и к лучшему.
