Sarah's Key is an emotional historical novel about how a little girl named Sarah experienced the roundup of Vel d'Hiv, but also about a journalist named Julia and how her life changes when researching Sarah's life. I enjoyed the two different timelines and how the stories become connected. The tone is very sentimental, Julia is reflecting a lot on the past, which makes the book repetitive at times.

The author has a talent to set a certain melancholic mood, which was also present in The Rainwatcher, but Sarah's Key has more of a plot.

The historical part of the novel is very interesting, a different approach to the Holocaust. I would definitely recommend this book.

Very interesting book to discuss and I liked learning about Vel d'Hiv. It sadly falls a bit flat in the second half

This was fine. Not what I was expecting. I enjoyed the first hundred pages(except the writing style). Then we lose a narrative part that I was enjoying way more. We started just focusing on Julie and how she felt about the things that happened and her stupid husband. Honestly while I was reading I had plot points that would have made this better and when they didn’t happen and it was just about Julia I was disappointed. That being said I am happy I read this because I honestly didn’t really know that these events took place in France.

A pretty dang strong yet brutal historical fiction.

It took awhile to get through this, as the perspective alternates between Sarah, the young french girl with a compelling storytelling voice, and a modern story of a journalist looking into an event from the holocaust along with her personal drama. The journalist was far less interesting to follow, but the end of the story was well written. Overall I think I could recommend it.
