It was an enjoyable read, however the style of writing made it pretty difficult for me to understand what was going on or how something was happening. Still a good book though.
It took me forever to read this. I couldn’t get into at all.
I'm so disappointed. The concept of this book was good, but the book fell short by a lot. I couldn't follow the story, and I couldn't figure out what is happening. This book is definitely a one star, and it was a waste of my time.

I knew this book was a slow start, but honestly it was a slog. Everything's there- interesting characters, imaginative and orginal world, ecological disaster- but somehow all those things are independent of each other. I like the characters, but the dialogue sounds like they're all having their own separate conversations. The sense of place is so vague that I have no idea what anybody's doing at any point in time, or when an action is specifically mentioned, it's completely separate from what the character is saying and comes right out of the blue. Suddenly they're dancing, or throwing water on their face, or punching someone, but there's absolutely no consistent scene-buildup. Awa gives the bag to Bal, but suddenly it's back with Awa with no explanation of how or why. They're at Council and Awa's giving a speech, but then people are shooting arrows at each other with zero prelude. It's such a struggle to read because nothing is connected to anything else. And it's even hard to get invested in the characters because I don't know what they want. Most egregiously, I know absolutely nothing about the main villain except that he used to be a carnival hack, but now he's a priest or something, and he wants to bleed people to death to cause ecological catastrophe? Why does he want that? And don't get me started on the magic system. Nothing about it is explained, so I don't know why all the problems can't be solved with it. I don't even know how people make the magic. Are they speaking words? Dancing? Drawing on spiritual power? I have so many questions and the book answers NONE OF THEM.

This book felt like you were thrown into the storyline without any background to help with the world building. The POVs switch and are not always clear whose POV you are in, without first gathering context clues (for instance, at one point it was from an elephant). It seemed like it would be interesting enough but I couldn't get into it - it just wasn’t for me.
